GORHAM, Maine – For the third time in his career, fifth-year senior Ben Drummey (Biddeford, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's track & field team has earned Second Team College Sports Communicators (CSC) Division III Academic All-America ® honors. A Nursing major, Drummey is the first student-athlete in University of Southern Maine history to earn the honor three times. He also earned Second Team honors in 2022-23 and 2023-24.
"It's so great to see Ben recognized with another Academic All-American honor, " said head coach Rob Whitten. "More so this year than ever Ben had to overcome adversity to achieve the athletic successes he did all while maintaining his stellar academic record during his nursing clinical internship. While sad to see him graduate, he'll go on to do great things. He'll always be recognized as probably one of the greatest Huskies athletically and academically in program history."
A seven-time All-American and two-time Division III National Champion in the pole vault, Drummey earned Second Team All-American status in the pole vault during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. He tied for 10th at the outdoor championships and placed 16th at the indoor championships. Drummey earned U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Region honors for both seasons and claimed the Little East Conference title in the outdoor pole vault, the sixth conference title of his career.
One of the most decorated student-athletes in USM history, Drummey holds the program record in both versions of the event with an indoor-best of 5.21m and an outdoor-best of 5.20m. Additional career accolades include USTFCCCA East Region Indoor Field Athlete of the Year awards in 2021-22 and 2023-24, the 2021 New England Region Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year award, the 2021 LEC Rookie Field Athlete of the Year award, and the title of 2024 LEC Indoor Field Athlete of the Year. In addition to his conference and national titles, Drummey placed first in the pole vault four times at the Division III New England Championships in his career. He also won six Maine State titles.
Drummey's academic accolades rival his athletic accomplishments, as he has been named a USTFCCCA All-Academic Athlete three times. He also earned the honor of NCAA Division III Men's Indoor Track & Field National Scholar Field Athlete of the Year in 2023 after successfully defending his national championship title in the pole vault at the Division III Indoor National Championships.
Named to the CSC Academic All-District team earlier in the spring, Drummey advanced to the Academic All-America ballot. Members of College Sports Communicators vote for student-athletes across NCAA Division I, II, III and NAIA who have excelled academically and athletically. College Sports Communicators began the distinguished Academic All-America® program in 1952, and since then, has honored more than 38,000 deserving student-athletes from numerous sports across all divisions with these elite Academic All-America® scholar-athlete honors. Currently, CSC sponsors Academic All-America® programs for men's soccer, women's soccer, football, volleyball, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's swimming & diving, women's swimming & diving, men's tennis, women's tennis, baseball, softball and men's and women's track and field/cross country. Many other sports are eligible through the At-Large program, including USM sponsored sports field hockey, golf, ice hockey, and wrestling.
Drummey's 2025 selection marks the 20th time that a University of Southern Maine student-athlete has been named to an Academic All-America team. His selection is the sixth in history of the men's track & field program joining two-time honoree CJ Moody '20 (Second Team, 2020; Third Team, 2019) and Darryl Whitney '03, a Second Team selection in 2003.
