DANBURY, Conn. - Top-seeded Western Connecticut State University scored each of the first nine goals of the game on its way to a 22-7 victory over second-seeded University of Massachusetts Boston in the 2025 Little East Conference (LEC) Championship Tournament Final Saturday. The Wolves won the LEC tournament title for the second time in three years, and once again punched their ticket to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
Jonathan Russack-Baker was named the 2025 LEC Championship Most Outstanding Player. He was 19-of-26 on faceoffs in the championship final after going 19-for-23 in the Wolves (13-6) semifinal win over Keene State College Thursday.
WestConn put the game out of reach in short order, scoring nine unanswered goals in the first 16:41 of the contest. The Wolves trio of senior Julian Duque (Mastic, N.Y.) and graduates Liam Ford (New Fairfield, Conn.) and Tyler Starrett (Redding, Conn.) each scored three of the nine tallies. Starrett scored once more before haltftime, as WestConn led, 11-3, at the break. Starrett and Russack-Baker scored the first two goals of the third quarter to open up a double-digit cushion that the home team maintained the rest of the way.
Ford and Duque finished with seven points each on six goals and one assist and five goals and two assists, respectively, while Starrett had five goals and one assist. Senior midfielder Matt Sweeney (Rocky Point, N.Y.) and freshman James Krieg (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) added two goals and one assist apiece. Junior J.J. Gitzinger (West Islip, N.Y.) paced the WestConn defense with two ground balls and three caused turnovers and freshman goalie Jake Kelly (Bethpage, N.Y.) tied a career-high with 15 saves.
Matt Hutchings and Jack Schartner scored twice each for the Beacons. James Boldy made 12 stops for UMass Boston.
