PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Little East Conference (LEC) announced its women’s indoor track & field postseason honors. Major awards were determined by a vote of the LEC’s eight head coaches, while all-conference honors were determined by an individual’s finish at the LEC Indoor Championships, which were hosted by Southern Maine last week.
Rhode Island College senior Chelsea Yang was named the 2022 LEC Field Athlete of the Year after once again winning the conference title in the weight throw (17.84m) and finishing 10th in the shot put (9.83m). Her season best toss of 18.64 meters currently ranks second in the nation, and was the top mark entering this past weekend.
UMass Dartmouth senior Kaitlyn Bernier was named the 2022 LEC Track Athlete of the Year after winning the 400 (58.59) and placing third in the 200 (26.71) at the conference championships. Her season-best 400 mark of 58.50 seconds is 21st-best in Division III.
Southern Maine’s Jaigan Boudreau was named the 2022 LEC Rookie Field Athlete of the Year after notching a first-place finish in the shot put (12.24m) and placing ninth in the weight throw (11.69m) at the LEC championships. Her season-best shot put throw of 12.42 meters is second-best in New England, while her season-best toss of 13.3 meters in the wight is 14th.
Plymouth State’s Athena Comeau was named the 2022 LEC Rookie Track Athlete of the Year after taking home the gold medal in the 55 dash (7.29), placing fourth in the 200 (26.84) and anchoring the Panthers’ LEC champion 4x200 relay (1:51.20). Her season-best 60 dash time of 7.85 seconds is 36th in DIII.
Southern Maine was named the Coaching Staff of the Year. Head coach Rob Whitten and assistant coaches Mike Drummer, Jim Giroux and Michael Roscoe guided the Huskies to their second straight LEC indoor title last weekend. USM’s 21 LEC indoor track & field title are a conference record.
