SCRANTON, Pa. - The Rhode Island College women’s basketball team handed previously undefeated and third-ranked University of Scranton its first loss of the season with a 62-55 victory in the Second Round of the 2023 NCAA Division III Championship Tournament Saturday night.
The Anchorwomen improved to 26-3 with the win, and will face the University of Chicago (23-4) Friday, which ewill be hosted by Babson at 5:30 p.m. The Maroons are ranked No. 10 in the nation by D3hoops.com and No. 12 by the Women's Basketball Coacvhes Association (WBCA). The Royals season ends with a record of 28-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• RIC led, 9-8, with 5:05 left in the first quarter and then ripped off a 9-2 run, paced by seven points from senior guard
Jeniyah Jones (Randolph, Mass.). RIC led by eight, 18-10, after the first quarter.
• Scranton did not go down without a fight, as the No. 3 team in the country showed up in the second quarter and trimmed the RIC lead down to just three, 28-25.
• The Royals were able to eclipse RIC and build a small lead, 43-39, heading into the final stanza.
• With their season on the line, the Anchorwomen responded, as they did in their previous two games, with a huge offensive fourth quarter.
• The trio of senior forward
Izabelle Booth (Newport, R.I.), sophomore forward
Jayda Bing (Hamilton, N.J.) and Medbury combined for 18 fourth quarter points to down the hosts and advance to the round of 16 for the first time in program history.
• Sophomore guard
Madison Medbury (Scituate, R.I.) finished with 12 points and 12 boards. Sophomore forward
Angelina Nardolillo (Hinsdale, N.H.) led the Anchorwomen with 14 points.
• Scranton senior guard
Bridgette Monaghan (Florham Park, N.J.) had 34 of the teams 55 points, which included several clutch three-pointers to keep the Royals in the game down the stretch.
• The Anchorwomen's 26 victories are a new program record for a season.
