PAWTUCKET, R.I. – Third-seeded Rhode Island College topped sixth-seeded UMass Dartmouth by a final count of 2-0 in the opening round of the 2019 Little East Conference (LEC) Men's Soccer Championship Tournament Wednesday.
FOR THE RECORD: The Anchormen improved to 10-6-2 with the win, while the Corsairs season ended at 8-8-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The two teams traded scoring bids from the opening whistle, and it was the hosts who managed to break through on the scoreboard when Thomas Aldana scored from the top of the box of a RIC corner kick in the 28th minute. That score held until the 74th minute, when Kossivi Dogbey deflected a Ramos corner kick just inside the right post, giving the Anchormen an insurance goal on their way to the 2-0 final.
Charlie Tashjian made the two tallies stand up for Rhode Island College as he totaled six saves to record the shutout victory in goal. He came up with a pair of point-blank saves in the 17th-minute, deflecting a scoring bid from Thiago DeCarvalho and then smothering the rebound attempt from Junior Monteiro. He came up with a pair of timely stops in the closing minutes, both off the foot of Monteiro.
UP NEXT: The Anchormen will travel to second-seeded Keene State College Friday for a 7 p.m. semifinal. The Owls bested RIC in the conference opener for both teams back on September 21 by a final count of 3-1.
