WestConn Advances to Semifinals on PKs, Remaining Men’s Soccer Slate Rescheduled

PAWTUCKET, R.I. – Fourth-seeded Western Connecticut State University and fifth-seeded UMass Boston played to a scoreless draw before the defending champion Colonials advanced on the penalty kicks in the lone Little East Conference Men's Soccer Championship Tournament match of the day Tuesday. The First Round match between third-seeded Rhode Island College and sixth-seeded UMass Dartmouth was rescheduled for Wednesday due to unplayable field conditions at RIC following the heavy rain that soaked the Providence area.

TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE UPDATE: The Anchormen and Corsairs will play their First Round match Wednesday at Rhode Island College, and with that the remaining rounds of the tournament will slide back one day each. The semifinals will take place Friday at top-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University and second-seeded Keene State College, and the championship match will take place Sunday at the highest remaining seed.

No. 4 Western Connecticut 0, No. 5 UMass Boston 0 – Box Score

FOR THE RECORD: The Colonials record moved to 13-4-3 after the official result ended in a draw, while the Beacons season ends at 12-3-4.

HOW IT HAPPEEND: Western Connecticut outshot UMass Boston 22-8 in the game and put the only five shots of the game on goal, but was unable to get one past Beacons' keeper Omar Castro-Dreyer who came up one save in the first half and three in the second before adding his final stop in the first overtime period.

Daniel Szabo did not see a shot on target during 110 minutes played between regulation and overtime, but made two stops when it mattered most to send the defending champion Colonials to the semifinals. He turned away the first attempt he faced from Rafael DeSouza, and then smothered Estevao Gomes' try in the fifth and final round. Penalties were tied at 3-3 heading into the final round, which Matthew Restrepo opened by finding the back of the net to put WestConn up 4-3.

UP NEXT: The Colonials will head to top-seeded and 21st-ranked Eastern Connecticut State University for Friday's semifinals.
