WASHINGTON, D.C. - WestConn Athletics received the One-Time Project Community Service Award by the National Association of Division III Athletics Administrators (NADIIIAA) for its participation in the school's annual Day of Service. The award was presented WestConn Director of Athletics
Lori Mazza at the NCAA Convention in Washington, D.C. this afternoon. Each year, NADIIIAA recognizes outstanding contributions to campus and community engagement across Division III institutions with awards that honor member institutions for projects that exemplify the Division III philosophy of service and citizenship. WestConn was honored in the One-Time Project category, specifically for its involvement in the Western Connecticut State University Day of Service on September 20, 2024.
"The Day of Service at WestConn has grown during my time here," said Mazza. "Every athletic team participates and it is a true testament to our commitment in being good community partners. It is a great way to open the year, by giving back to the surrounding area that supports us in so many ways. I am humbled by the efforts of our student-athletes and coaches, knowing they made our community a little bit better, and for that I am grateful."
The WestConn Day of Service has a meaningful impact on the local community, especially among non-profit organizations and the Danbury school system. Students, faculty, and staff come together and volunteer their time across a variety of service activities, demonstrating the power of collective action and compassion. Non-profit partners benefit from the additional hands and energy, allowing them to accomplish more than they could on their own. The event fosters stronger relationships between the university and the surrounding community. It encourages ongoing civic engagement, as many participants express a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper understanding of the local community. The WestConn Day of Service meets tangible community needs and strengthens the spirit of unity, empathy, and service on our campus.
"Day of Service is an amazing day for our student-athletes because it allows us to work together for a purpose beyond our own needs and wants," said WestConn Head Field Hockey Coach Dani McDonnell. "By giving their time and energy toward a project, our athletes build empathy, gain a greater sense of perspective and strengthen our bonds as well. The small impact we make for that one day leaves us feeling proud and connected and a desire to continue to serve others."
With its participation in the Day of Service, WestConn student-athletes demonstrate teamwork, compassion, and commitment to the Greater Danbury area together with the entire Western Connecticut State University campus community. Nearly 70 volunteer sites welcomed representatives from all 21 Wolves' varsity teams (550 participating student-athletes), who dedicated their time to meaningful projects that strengthened local connections. Volunteers participated in activities such as cleaning parking garages, assisting teachers and students in local schools, supporting food pantries, and contributing to projects at the fire department and a community museum. Through these projects, participants directly contributed to improving the quality of life for Greater Danbury residents.
"The Day of Service allows me to sacrifice my time to help an organization in my area and give back to my community that has done so much for me," said WestConn softball senior Grace Parkosewich. "Not only is it a team bonding experience but it's also therapeutic. The Day of Service makes me feel so proud to be a part of the WestConn softball team. I constantly remind myself that I get to be a part of this and that I don't have to. The phrase "I get to" is my constant reminder daily that life is so rewarding."
