UMass Boston Softball Knocks Out Springfield, Bows Out to No. 24 Ithaca in NCAA Regional

ITHACA, N.Y. - The University of Massachusetts Boston softball team saw its season come to a close on the second day of competition at NCAA División III Regional Championship hosted by Ithaca College.  The Beacons eliminated Springfield College to open the day’s action before falling to the 24th-ranked Bombers. UMass Boston ended its season with a 33-13-1 overall record.

The opener of the Beacons’ day saw Mary Mathews go 3-for-3 at the dish and drive in each of the team’s first three runs. Her triple to the gap in right plated Lauren Miner in the top of the second before her single up the middle in the fourth plated Miner and Amauri English, putting UMass Boston in front 3-0. Matthews would score the game’s final run in the top of the seventh on Izzy Levasse’s single to right for the 4-2 final
 
The Pride pulled back within one with a two-run bottom of the sixth. Kate Katseto’s bases-loaded single to left scored Lyndsay Dons before Taylor Falot scored from third on a ground out by Katie Manzon.
 
Bri Melchionda scattered three hits and three walks with four Ks over her six total innings of work in the game to improve to 11-4; she re-entered the circle after Jacqueline Cherry was touched up for two runs on two hits and two walks.
 
Amelia DeRosa went the distance in the circle for Springfield, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits while tallying four strikeouts.

The Bombers scored the first run of the game in the top of the third on an RBI-single from Kailen Winkelblech and never looked back. The Bombers tacked on three more runs in the fourth to open a 4-0 lead and then put any hopes of a UMass Boston comeback out of reach with a sixth-run sixth inning, which included a grand slam off the bat of Anna Bello.
 
Mady Rowell improved to 11-2 in the circle after scattering three hits and a walk with three Ks in her five innings of work. Bello finished the game 3-for-4 with five RBI and two runs scored, while Winkelblech was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
 
Sofie Richland was 2-for-3 with a stolen base. Cherry took the loss after giving up four runs o six hits and four free passes in her four innings of work, dropping her record to 13-5.
