PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Little East Conference (LEC) announced its 2021 Women’s Tennis All-LEC selections and major award recipients Wednesday, following a vote of the league’s head coaches. Salem State University senior Anastasia Startseva and Rhode Island College junior Jenna Lisi shared LEC Player of the Year honors. While Bridgewater State University freshman Madeline Von Ruden was named LEC Rookie of the Year RIC’s Adam Spring was named LEC Coach of the Year.
Startseva earned LEC Player of the Year honors for the second time in her career after going 8-0 in conference play at No. 1 singles this season, in addition to going 8-0 at No. 1 doubles in league play. The senior went 16-0 overall at No. 1 singles and 13-4 overall at No. 1 doubles. She was first named LEC Player of the Year in 2018 as a freshman, while also garnering LEC Rookie of the Year honors.
This marks the third LEC Player of the Year honor in as many years for Lisi, who posted a 7-0 record in conference play at No. 1 singles this season, in addition to going 7-0 at No. 1 doubles. Her record now stands at 12-0 in singles play and 13-0 in doubles matches, all at the No. 1 positions. Her play once again helped led Rhode Island College to the LEC regular season and tournament championships.
Von Ruden was elected LEC Rookie of the Year by the coaches after posting a record of 4-3 at No. 1 singles and 5-3 at No. 1 doubles in her LEC matches this year. The freshman finished her first collegiate season with 7-7 singles record and a 9-7 doubles ledger, both played at the top flights for the duration of the season. She helped lead the Bears to an overall record of 13-3 this season, including a runner-up finish in the LEC tournament as its No. 2 seed.
Spring was named LEC Coach of the Year after guiding the Anchorwomen to their fifth consecutive LEC regular season and tournament championships. RIC will enter the NCAA tournament, which is contested in the spring, with an undefeated record of 16-0, marking the fifth straight season the Anchorwomen enter the national tournament with an unblemished record. This marks the seventh Coach of the Year honor for Spring in the last nine seasons.
This season also marks the debut of the LEC Women's Tennis Sportsmanship Team, as selected by each of the LEC's nine head coaches. The complete list of award winners is listed below.
