Cassy Hanneman’s arrival on the UMass Boston campus helped establish the Beacons as the premiere women’s volleyball program in the Little East Conference (LEC) over the last decade.
The setter from Denver, Colorado was named the 2008 LEC Rookie of the Year and Second Team All-Conference selection while leading UMass Boston to their first-ever LEC tournament final. She then quarterbacked the Beacons to their first-ever Little East regular season and tournament championships in 2009, a feat UMass Boston would repeat in her junior and senior seasons in 2010 and 2011. Since 2009, the Beacons have won a LEC-record nine conference tournament championships and LEC-record 10 regular season titles.
UMass Boston enjoyed its most successful four-year run in program history during Hanneman’s tenure, posting an overall record of 113-24 that includes the only 30-win seasons in program history; the Beacons went 30-5 in both 2009 and 2010. The 2010 campaign culminated with the program’s first NCAA Division III East Region championship and Elite Eight appearance.
Hanneman finished her career as a four-time All-LEC selection, garnering First Team honors her junior and senior years following Second Team selections as a freshman and sophomore. Her senior campaign saw her named a First Team All-Region and Honorable Mention All-America selection by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). Her efforts in the classroom saw her named an LEC All-Academic selection in each of her three years of eligibility.
Hanneman is the Beacons’ career leader in assists (4,152) and assists per set (8.85). at the conclusion of her playing career, she also owned the career records for matches played (137) and sets played (469) while ranking in the top-five in career service aces (196) and career digs (906). Hanneman still owns the top three spots on the single-season assists list and owns three of the top four spots when it comes to assists per set. She totaled a program-record 1,201 assists as a sophomore and averaged a program-best 10.92 assists per set as a senior.
Hanneman earned her bachelor’s degree in exercise health science from UMass Boston in 2012. She was inducted into the UMass Boston Athletics Hall of Fame in 2018.
