Rachel Riley-Schafer is regarded as one of the greatest low-post players in Rhode Island College women’s basketball history. She was a four-time all LEC-selection from 2008-12, earning First Team All-Conference her junior and senior seasons after garnering Second Team All-Conference honors as a sophomore and making the All-Rookie Team as a freshman.
Riley-Schafer led RIC to its first-ever LEC regular season and tournament championships as a senior in 2011-12 as the Anchorwomen posted an overall record of 25-4, setting the program record for wins that still stands to this day. RIC made its first NCAA tournament appearance since 1985, and advanced to the Second Round for the second time in program history following a 69-54 opening round victory over Baruch.
The Coventry, Rhode Island native received honorable mention to the 2011-12 Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and All-America teams after averaging 13.5 points and 9.9 rebounds per game and shooting a league-best 51.8 percent from the field. Riley-Schafer was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2012 LEC Championship Tournament, in addition to being named First Team All-ECAC, Second Team All-Region by the New England Women’s Basketball Association (NEWBA) and Third Team All-Northeast Region by D3Hoops.com
Riley-Schafer played in 108 games over her four years in a RIC uniform. She totaled 1,263 points and 1,043 rebounds during her time with the Anchorwomen, making her one of three players in program history to record 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds, while also tallying 169 steals, 135 assists and 87 blocks. She ranks third all-time in career rebounds and is eighth all-time in career points.
Riley-Schafer earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Rhode Island College in 2012. She was inducted into the Rhode Island College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018.
