Bobby Bailey was an outstanding guard on the Rhode Island College men’s basketball team from 2006-09, leading the Anchormen to a pair of Little East Conference regular season and tournament championships. He helped RIC to three straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including a berth in the NCAA Elite 8 in 2007.
The Fall River, Massachusetts native earned All-LEC honors in each of his three seasons at RIC, earning First Team honors as a senior after back-to-back Second-Team selections. His senior campaign saw him named the LEC Co-Player of the Year and the first-ever LEC Defensive Player of the Year.
Bailey made an immediate impact on the court upon his arrival at RIC as a sophomore in 2006-07, starting all 31 games and averaging 10.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.2 steals per contest. The Anchormen captured their first-ever LEC tournament championship that season before making an Elite Eight appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship tournament for the first time since 1976. His performance over RIC’s first two NCAA tournament contests saw him named to the NCAA Sectional All-Tournament Team.
Bailey’s most decorated season came as a senior, which saw him play in 23 games, averaging 12.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.8 steals per game while leading the Anchormen to an overall record of 23-6 and the LEC regular season crown with a near-perfect league mark of 13-1. In addition to his LEC honors, Bailey was named First Team All-District by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and Second Team All-Region by D3hoops.com and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC). RIC was in the LEC title game for the third time in as many seasons during his tenure, and qualified for the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament for the third time.
As a junior in 2007-08, Bailey averaged 10.0 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.0 steals over his 27 games played while leading the Anchormen to their second LEC tournament title in as many years. He was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2008 LEC Men’s Basketball Tournament after averaging 11.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.0 steals and 1.0 blocks over three LEC tournament games, including 14 points, five boards, five assists, two steals and a block in the championship game.
Bailey closed out his three-year career as an Anchorman having played in 81 games, starting 75 of them. He totaled 876 career points, 372 rebounds, 208 assists, 162 steals and 59 blocks. He averaged 10.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.0 steals per game for his career.
Bailey earned a bachelor’s degree in public relations from Rhode Island College in 2010. He was inducted into the Rhode Island College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015.
