B.L. Elfring served the University of Southern Maine Department of Athletics for 27 years as its Sports Information Director, and eventually Assistant Athletic Director for NCAA Compliance. He joined the Huskies in 1995, and retired in 2021. During that time, Elfring served as the Little East Conference (LEC) publicist from 1997 through 1998, and served as a member of the LEC's Hall of Fame Selection Committee, a role he has continued to hold since retirement.
Over his nearly three decades of work at USM, Elfring tirelessly promoted the achievements of Southern Maine's Division III intercollegiate athletic teams, including the 1997 NCAA Division III National Championship from the Huskies' storied baseball program, five NCAA Division III Final Four appearances by the Huskies' women's basketball team, and a string of nearly two dozen Little East Conference women's track & field titles.
Elfring served a three-year term on the College Sports Information Directors Association (now College Sports Communicators [CSC]) Legislative Committee (1989-1992), and was the Coordinator for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Region One Player and Pitcher of the Year Selection Committee for eight years (2005-2013).
In total, Elfring’s career spanned 42 years and included stops at the University of Maine and UMass Lowell prior to his arrival in Gorham. Elfring earned numerous awards for his longevity and accomplishments in both the field of Sports Information and Athletic Administration, including being inducted into the College Sports Communicators Hall of Fame in 2018 and earned the CSC Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021.
Elfring was recognized in 2002 as the ECAC-SIDA (now EAST-COMM) Irving T. Marsh Award recipient, and in 2024 was named recipient of the organization’s Pete Nevins Award for Distinguished Achievement. In 2013, Elfring was the recipient of the National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators (NADIIIAA) Transitional Athletic Administrator Award in recognition of his role as Southern Maine's Director of Compliance.
Elfring has remained actively involved with Huskies’ athletics since retiring, serving on the Husky Hall of Fame Committee and leading the effort to update and research Husky record books. The 2001 University of Southern Maine Professional Staff Award recipient was inducted into the Husky Hall of Fame in 2024.
