Ed Cummins was an eight-time Little East Conference (LEC) champion in the throws, winning the hammer and weight throw each of his four seasons at RIC from 2012-16. He also earned LEC All-Academic honors five of a possible six times during his career, was a seven-time All-New England performer, and was the 2015 Division III New England Champion in the weight throw as a senior (18.57m) during the indoor season.
Cummins competed at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships six times between the indoor and outdoor seasons. He earned All-America honors twice in the hammer throw at the national outdoor championships, placing sixth with a season-best mark of 59.12 meters as a junior and winning the DIII national title as a senior with a program-record toss of 62.19 meters to cap off his decorated career. Cummins had a career-best ninth-place finish in the weight throw as a junior at the 2015 NCAA Division III Indoor Championships with a season-best mark of 18.46 meters, which was just one position shy of earning All-America.
Hailing from Lincoln, Rhode Island, Cummins was named the 2016 LEC Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Year after posting a mark of 18.56 that was the second-best in LEC Championship history at the time an ranks him third today, while his LEC-championship best toss of 60.24 meters in the hammer ranked and remains second-best in conference history.
Cummins helped lead the Anchormen to what is to-date their only LEC team title, which they captured during the 2013 outdoor season on his way to being named the 2013 LEC Outdoor Rookie Field Athlete of the Year. He won the hammer (50.40m) at the LEC Championship earning his first All-New England honor with a six-place finish in the hammer (52.56m) Cummins capped his first collegiate season with a 13th-place finish at the ECAC Championships (50.29m).
Cummins earned his bachelor’s degree in medical imaging radiological technology from Rhode Island College in 2017, and was inducted into the RIC Athletics Hall of Fame in 2022. He was also recently named to RIC’s 100th Anniversary Men’s Track & Field Team.
