Hall of Fame
Myles Berry was a fixture of the UMass Boston athletic department for nearly 40 years in his roles as an administrator and head coach, leading the men’s lacrosse, men’s soccer and women’s soccer programs during his tenure. He held a variety of administrative roles in the department up until his retirement in June 2022.
Berry was a three-time LEC Men’s Lacrosse Coach of the Year, winning the award in the Conference’s inaugural season in 2001 before winning claiming the honor in 2003 and 2006. He was named the LEC Men’s Soccer Coach of the Year in 2006, making him the first-ever individual to be named LEC Coach of the Year for two different sports in the same calendar year.
Berry led the UMass Boston men’s lacrosse program for 20 seasons from 1988-2007 totaling a program-record 147 wins. He inherited a program that won just a single game over the prior two seasons, and transformed the Beacons into a 10-win program in his fifth season as UMass Boston went 10-5 in 1992. The Beacons went 11-3 the following season, marking a program record for wins in a season while going 6-3 in their first year in the Pilgrim League.
UMass Boston posted a near-perfect 12-1 record in 1996, setting a new program record for wins that would be match by the 2001 squad’s 12-5 ledger. That total remained the program record for wins in a season until 2022. His 2001 squad earned the No. 2 seed in the first-ever LEC Championship Men’s Lacrosse Championship Tournament, defeating third-seeded UMass Dartmouth in 12-10 in the semifinals before falling to top-seeded Eastern Connecticut in the title game.
Berry coached two College Lacrosse USA Preseason All-Americans, eight New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) All-Region selections, two NEILA Rookie of the Year recipients, and two ECAC New England All-Stars, one of whom earned Player of the Year honors. His players earned a total of 54 All-Conference honors, 30 of which were All-LEC accolades.
Berry coached the Beacons’ first-ever LEC major award recipients in Josh Stolp, who was named the 2003 LEC Offensive Player of the Year on his way to being named ECAC Player of the Year, and 2003 LEC Rookie of the Year Ryan O’Rourke. Drew Rowley was named the LEC Defensive Player of the Year in 2005.
Berry was the founding head coach of the Beacons’ women’s soccer program in 1995, leading the team to 16 victories over its first three seasons as a varsity program. Berry later guided the men’s soccer program to 77 victories from 2003-12, including a career-best 11 wins in the 2006 and 2011. His men’s soccer players earned 10 All-LEC honors and four National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Region honors
Berry was inducted in the UMass Boston Hall of Fame in 2022.
