LEXINGTON, Ky. – After hoisting their third NCAA Regional title in 2013, the Beacons head into their 2014 campaign ranked 22nd in Division III volleyball according to the American Coaches Volleyball Association (AVCA) Preseason Poll, which was released Wednesday afternoon.
The Beacons, who have their eyes set on earning their third straight and fourth overall regional title begin their 2014 season on Saturday, August 30 when they travel to Haverford College for a two-day tournament. Wednesday’s announcement marks just the second time in program history that the Beacons will open up a new season ranked in the top-25.
In total six teams that the Beacons are scheduled to face in 2014 were recognized on the AVCA Preseason Poll. Included in the ranked teams are in-region rivals Williams College and Roger Williams University, both of which UMass defeated in the regional tournament to earn a ticket to Holland, Michigan.
UMass Boston was the lone team from the New England region ranked in the top-25. Williams College and Roger Williams University both received votes on the poll, and will face the Beacons during the regular season. Last year, UMass Boston defeated both squads in the NCAA Regional tournament to earn a spot in the National Championship Tournament.
Co-Head Coaches Terry Condon and Michael Houlihan welcome back a veteran core of players who were apart of last year’s championship squad. Included in that group is AVCA All-Region honoree Elizabeth Glavan (Edina, Minn.) and ECAC New England All-Star Julia Murphy (Canton, Mass.). Glavan was also the Little East Conference Defensive Player of the Year, while Murphy earned LEC Co-Offensive Player of the Year honors. The duo were also named to the NEWVA All-Rookie and Honorable Mention teams.
