Thompson was honored and recognized at the NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship banquet in St. Louis, Mo. during last week’s D-III Championship tournament celebrations.

    BOSTON - Sophomore middle hitter Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, Calif.) spiked for 16 kills to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston women's volleyball team over visiting Emerson College, 25-18, 25-18, 18-25, 25-11, tonight at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The victory marks the 100th for Head Coach Terry Condon at UMass Boston for a record of 100-55 (.645). She is the all-time victory leader for the Beacons and owns a career record of 292-168 (.635), including stints at Texas A&M University and California State University Bakersfield. UMass Boston wins its fifth straight match to open the season with a 5-0 mark for its best start in school history. The Beacons received 29 votes in the most recent Division III American Volleyball Coaches Association national poll. The Lions suffer their first loss of the season and fall to 3-1.

    SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Massachusetts Boston volleyball team defeated McMurry University, 3-0, this afternoon to capture the 2010 Trinity University River City Classic in San Antonio, Texas. The Beacons went a perfect 4-0 over the weekend defeating Hardin-Simmons and Whitworth on Friday while topping the No. 12-ranked Trinity University Tigers this morning before cruising against McMurry to round out the tournament field. McMurry falls to 0-3 on the season, while the 4-0 start for UMass Boston is the program’s best start ever.

    NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Boston has been predicted to repeat as the Little East volleyball regular-season champions after a vote by the eight conference coaches’ to determine the annual preseason poll. The Beacons sit atop the preseason survey for the second-straight season after earning seven of the eight first-place votes and 62 total points. Western Connecticut State University was the clear consensus choice to finish second after receiving six second-place votes and 53 total points to outdistance themselves from No. 3 Keene State College.

    WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Veteran volleyball coach Fran Vandermeer will fill the vacancy as head women’s coach at Eastern Connecticut State University. She has been named as the sixth permanent coach in the program’s 35-year history and will serve in a parttime capacity. Vandermeer succeeds Peter Viteritti, who compiled a two-year record of 32-30 in a parttime capacity over the past two years.
