Western Connecticut Falls to Middlebury in NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Middlebury College scored the only goal of the game in the 83rd minute to record a 1-0 win over Western Connecticut State University in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship Tournament Saturday, hosted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Sophomore Virginia Charman (Wenham, Mass.) broke the scoreless deadlock with 7:06 left in the second half, and that was all the offense classmate Ursula Alwang (Weston, Conn.) would need as she stopped all five shots on goal she faced in net for the Panthers, who outshot Western Connecticut 19-9 in the game and had a 5-3 advantage on corner kicks.

Senior Jillian Fernandez (Columbia, Conn.) had eight stops in goal for the 2017 LEC Champion Colonials, who finished the 2017 season with a record of 17-2-2.
