CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The UMass Boston softball team opened the 2018 NCAA Division III Championship Tournament with a 6-1 loss to Tufts University Friday afternoon in a game hosted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The Beacons (17-24) will next face the loser of today's second game between MIT and Framingham State Saturday at 1:30 p.m., weather permitting.

The Jumbos (30-8) scored five of their six runs in the bottom of the first after the first three batters of the game singled to lead off the inning and load the bases. The singles kept coming to account for three of the five runs, while a bases-loaded walk and an error accounted for the remaining two.

The score remained 5-0 until the top of the sixth, when sophomore Gigi Braga (Medford, Mass.) drove in freshman Gianna Salemi (Windsor, Conn.) from third with her single to the gap in left for UMass Boston's lone run of the game. The Jumbos got the run right back in the bottom of the frame for the 6-1 final.

Kristina Haghdan improved to 5-1 in the circle after allowing just two hits over her five shutout innings of work.  Samantha Siciliano was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

Sophomore Jess Greenspan (Rocky Hill, Conn.) fell to 12-15 with the loss after allowing four earned runs on 11 hits in her complete-game effort.
