KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A total of six men's soccer players representing four Little East Conference (LEC) institutions have been named to the 2017 United Soccer Coaches Division III All-New England Region Team, it was announced Tuesday evening. Each was a first-team all-LEC selection.
UMass Boston senior back Marcelo Cunha (Goiania, Brazil) was the lone second-team all-region selection, who started in each of his 18 games played and contributed two goals and two assists on the offensive end of the field. Beacons' junior midfielder Denis Martinez (Chelsea, Mass.) was named a third-team all-region pick after starting in each of his 16 games played, which saw him chip in with one goal and one assist.
Four other players earned third-team all-region honors; Plymouth State University senior forward Nick Rutherford (Sydney Australia), Rhode Island College senior forward Komla Dogbey (Providence, R.I.) and junior midfielder Dennis Vasquez (Providence, R.I.), and Western Connecticut State University senior back Shane Bierfeldt (Torrington, Conn.).
Rutherford finished second in the LEC in scoring this season with 9 goals and a league-best 10 assists for 28 points, while Vazquez was third in total scoring with eight goals and five assists for 21 points. Dogbey tied for fifth in the LEC in scoring with seven goals and two assists for 16 points, while Bierfeldt led a defense that allowed just five goals in seven conference games while adding two goals and two assists.
