PAWTUCKET, R.I. – The UMass Boston and University of Southern Maine baseball teams officially wrapped up the 2018 campaign as nationally ranked programs following the release of the final D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Collegiate Baseball News polls of the year.
UMass Boston ends the year ranked No. 6 in the ABCA/Collegiate Baseball News Poll and No. 10 in the D3baseball.com/NCBWA Poll. Southern Maine wrapped the year ranked No. 17 in the final ABCA/Collegiate baseball News Poll and No. 18 in the D3baseball.com/NCBWA Poll.
The Beacons finished the 2018 season with an overall record of 37-10 after advancing to the Division III New England Region Championship as the No. 1 seed. The 2018 Little East Conference (LEC) regular season and tournament championships posted regional wins over Penn State Berks (15-1) and Ramapo (2-1 and 7-5), but fell twice to regional champion SUNY Oswego (11-4 and 10-4).
The Huskies went 30-15 in this season while making their way to the Division III New York Region Championship for the second straight season, this time as the No. 3 seed. Southern Maine, which saw head coach Ed Flaherty win his 1,000th career game in 2018, posted victories over Amherst (3-2), Salisbury (1-0) and SUNY Cortland (12-10 in 10 innings) while dropping a pair of decisions to regional champion Swarthmore (9-6 and 9-3).
